Johnn Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California in 1902. In 1919, Steinbeck went to Stanford University, where he enrolled in literature and writing courses. In 1926, he went to New York City to try to pursue the dream of becoming a writer. In 1929, he published his first novel, Cup of Gold. During the 1930's, Steinbeck produced most of his famous novels, Tortilla Flat, Of Mice and Men, and The Grapes of Wrath. After marriage, Steinbeck published and worked on short stories. Of all the works Steinbeck has written, 17 of his works have been made into movies. Steinbeck won the Nobel Prize in 1962 and died as a legendary American writer in 1968.
